Koko the Parrot

Age 7 · These are Koko's needs, in our family's words.
The 3 big ones
  1. Warn me before loud noises. Count down from 5.
  2. "Wing break" means I need quiet time. Let me go.
  3. One instruction at a time works best.
Do
  • Tell him what's happening next
  • Let him hold his green blanket
  • Offer the quiet corner, don't force it
  • Crackers and apple slices are always a yes
Avoid
  • Surprise loud noises (blender, vacuum)
  • Taking the blanket away "to help"
  • Lots of questions when he's upset
  • Chocolate — allergy, no exceptions
In their own words: “I'm not being bad. I just need a minute.”
